2 Big to Rig is Ghost‘s second concert film, which was filmed over two sold out shows in Mexico City entirely on 16mm film. The film, which was in theaters for a limited amount of time around the world, gives the audience a true “ritual” experience without actually being there. It also gives you a glimpse backstage with how the entire stage setup is rigged (hence the name), what all it takes to set everything up each night, and of course, the concert itself.
There was supposed to be three sold out shows, but unfortunately, lead singer Tobias Forge suffered a terrible case of food poisoning and had to cancel the first show last minute. After taking a day to recover, he proceeded to rock everyone’s socks off at the Palacio de los Deportes arena.
Despite dealing with “The Curse of Montezuma,” Papa V Perpetua (Tobias Forge) sounded spectacular, and the entire film felt like you were actually there watching the band live. Hits like “Mary on a Cross,” “Year Zero,” and “Cirice” were played, along with some newer songs like “Satanized” and “Peacefield” from their recent album, Skeletá. Ghost is notorious for theatrics, but they definitely stepped it up a notch this time with even more stage costumes and equipment. The entire lighting rig weighs roughly 68 tons, and the backdrop itself is constantly changing into a new scene almost every song.
The entire show is truly a spectacle; you can tell Forge and the crew really gave it their all. This concert film and its soundtrack are something that will be remembered for years to come, especially if you were there live and got to see it in the making.
