‘Celebrity Deathmatch’ To Return On MTV2
MTV2 has placed a pilot order for a new version of Celebrity Deathmatch, the classic claymation series that pitted the biggest pop culture figures against each other in a cartoonishly brutal bout, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The “reinvented” series will retain its original core concept, but per a press release will be updated “for a world of social media and hourly Twitter wars.” The new pilot marks the MTV show’s second revival, following a brief stint on its sister network in 2006 and 2007.
The original Celebrity Deathmatch debuted on MTV in 1998 and went on to air 75 episodes before ending its run in 2002. While the show often featured fights inspired by real life pop competitors (Eminem and Kid Rock, Liam and Noel Gallagher, David Letterman and Jay Leno), it was often equally happy to settle nonsensical scores, such as Fiona Apple vs. Blues Traveler’s John Popper, or Mariah Carey vs. Jim Carrey (which also featured a guest appearance from Drew Carey).
